People no longer fear Covid with drowning and fire bigger concerns

People are also more concerned about being murdered than of dying from Covid

People in the UK are not concerned about dying from Covid with cancer, drowning and fire much more serious fears, a new survey shows

Now research by Affordable Funerals has discovered just 20 per cent of people said they most feared dying from a terminal illness compared to other causes, with just four percent of people saying Covid was a concern.

Howard Hodgson, CEO of Memoria Affordable Funerals, said: “The Covid-19 pandemic changed many of our lives immeasurably, and there is no doubt it has placed our health service under immense strain.

“Each and every death through Covid has been a tragedy, but serious illnesses such as cancer and dementia remain a very real danger.

“Nobody likes to think about their own mortality, but it is important to have open and honest discussions with our families about what we want when we reach the end.

“There are many practicalities involved when someone dies, such as arranging the funeral and organising the will, and too many people choose to bury their heads in the sand.

“Death shouldn’t be such a taboo topic and we need to be ready to tackle the stigma so that we and our families are better prepared for the end of our lives.”

The number of people waiting for hospital treatment in England reached a record six million this week, as many routine appointments were missed due to the health crisis.

Charities have raised concerns that thousands of patients have missed serious diagnoses as Covid impacted routine screening and access to GPs.

Affordable Funerals asked leading polling firm OnePoll to quiz 1,000 Brits on their attitudes towards different causes of death.

Twenty per cent said they most feared dying of a terminal illness, with drowning the second worst cause of death at 16 per cent.

Covid was chosen by just four per cent of respondents, with a violent attack (9%) and fire (15%) also named.
